Technical Intern Training - Required Documents

The Technical Intern Training status of residence is for activities involving technical intern training based on the Technical Intern Training Act. It is divided into Technical Intern Training (i), (ii), and (iii).

Notice of Upcoming System Change: The Japanese government plans to abolish the current Technical Intern Training system and transition to a new “Ikusei Shuro (育成就労)” system starting in 2027. The new system aims to develop human resources and secure workforce, and will allow job changes within a certain scope. Transitional measures will apply to those currently residing under the Technical Intern Training status, so please check for the latest information.

Important Notes Before Applying

  • Applications with incomplete documents may result in significant delays in processing or denial of permission.
  • All certificates issued in Japan must be submitted within 3 months of the date of issue.
  • Documents written in foreign languages must be accompanied by a Japanese translation.
  • Submitted documents will not be returned in principle. If you wish to have them returned, please inform the counter at the time of application.
  • Additional documents may be requested during the review process.
  • Technical intern training applications can only be submitted after receiving certification of the technical intern training plan from the Organization for Technical Intern Training (OTIT).

Certificate of Eligibility Application (New)

This is the application for those who wish to enter Japan with a new Technical Intern Training status of residence.

1. Application for Certificate of Eligibility - 1 copy

2. Photograph - 1

4cm (H) x 3cm (W), a clear photo taken from the front with no hat and plain background, taken within 6 months prior to the application. Write the applicant’s name on the back of the photo and attach it to the photo section of the application form. Printing the photo directly on the application form is also acceptable, but you may be asked to retake it if it does not meet the specifications.

3. Return envelope - 1

Write the recipient’s address on a standard envelope and attach stamps for registered mail.

4. Copy of Technical Intern Training Plan Certification Notice and Certification Application - 1 copy each

These must pertain to the technical intern training plan that received certification under Article 8, Paragraph 1 of the Technical Intern Training Act (or the amended version if there has been a change certification under Article 11, Paragraph 1 of the same Act). Limited to cases where the status of residence related to the application corresponds to the technical intern training categories specified in Article 2, Paragraphs 2 and 4 of the same Act.

If someone other than the applicant submits the application documents, the person submitting must present identification documents (such as a company ID card).

If the name on the Certificate of Eligibility differs from the name on the passport, the entry procedures may take time, so please also submit a copy of the passport if possible.


Change of Status of Residence Application

This is the application for those who wish to change from Technical Intern Training (i) to (ii), or from (ii) to (iii). If you are no longer engaged in activities based on your current status of residence, your status may be revoked, so please apply promptly.

1. Application for Change of Status of Residence - 1 copy

2. Photograph - 1

4cm (H) x 3cm (W), a clear photo taken from the front with no hat and plain background, taken within 6 months prior to the application. A photo is not required if you are applying for a change to a status of residence that is not for mid-to-long-term residents.

3. Passport and Residence Card — For presentation

4. Copy of Technical Intern Training Plan Certification Notice and Certification Application - 1 copy each

These must pertain to the technical intern training plan that received certification under Article 8, Paragraph 1 of the Technical Intern Training Act (or the amended version if there has been a change certification under Article 11, Paragraph 1 of the same Act). Limited to cases where the status of residence related to the application corresponds to the technical intern training categories specified in Article 2, Paragraphs 2 and 4 of the same Act.

5. Certificate of Resident Tax Taxation (or Non-taxation) and Tax Payment Certificate - 1 copy each

Must show the total annual income and tax payment status. Issued by the ward/city/municipal office of the place of residence as of January 1. If a single certificate shows both total income and tax payment status, submitting just one is sufficient. If the certificate cannot be issued due to recent entry into Japan or a change of address, please contact the nearest Regional Immigration Services Bureau.

If someone other than the applicant submits the application documents, the person submitting must present identification documents (certificate of agent, family register, etc.).


Extension of Period of Stay Application

This is the application for those who are already residing in Japan under the Technical Intern Training status and wish to continue the same activities.

1. Application for Extension of Period of Stay - 1 copy

2. Photograph - 1

4cm (H) x 3cm (W), a clear photo taken from the front with no hat and plain background, taken within 6 months prior to the application. A photo is not required for those who are not mid-to-long-term residents or for those applying for an extension of 3 months or less.

3. Passport and Residence Card — For presentation

Myanmar Exception: For technical intern trainees who were unable to temporarily return to their home country during Technical Intern Training (iii) due to the unstable situation in Myanmar, please refer to the Special Response Notice (PDF). When applying, submission of the Explanation Document (Word) (sample, PDF) is required.
