Dependent - Required Documents

The Dependent visa status can be obtained by the spouse or children of foreign nationals residing in Japan with work or student visa status.

Applicable Activities	Daily activities as a spouse or child who is supported by a person residing in Japan with a visa status listed in Appended Table I (excluding Diplomatic, Official, Specified Skilled Worker (i), and Technical Intern Training) or Student status
Period of Stay	A period individually designated by the Minister of Justice (not exceeding 5 years)

Applications with incomplete documents may result in significant delays or denial of permission.
All certificates issued in Japan must be submitted within 3 months of the date of issue.
Documents written in foreign languages must be accompanied by a Japanese translation.
Submitted documents will not be returned in principle.

This application is for those who wish to enter Japan with Dependent status for the first time.

Certificate of employment or copy of business permit (document proving occupation)
Residence tax certificate (taxation/non-taxation) and tax payment certificate (showing total income and tax payment status for one year)

If the supporter engages in other activities (e.g., student):

This application is for those already residing in Japan with a different visa status who wish to change to Dependent status.

If the supporter’s visa status is revoked, the Dependent status will also be affected.
The Dependent visa status generally prohibits employment. To work part-time, you must obtain Permission to Engage in Activities Other Than Those Permitted Under the Status of Residence Previously Granted.
