Dependent - Required Documents
The Dependent visa status can be obtained by the spouse or children of foreign nationals residing in Japan with work or student visa status.

Important Notes Before Applying

- Applications with incomplete documents may result in significant processing delays or denial of permission.
- All certificates issued in Japan must be submitted within 3 months of the date of issue.
- Documents written in foreign languages must be accompanied by a Japanese translation.
Application for Certificate of Eligibility (New)
1. Application for Certificate of Eligibility - 1 copy
2. Photograph - 1
4cm (H) x 3cm (W), taken within 6 months before application, front-facing, without hat, plain background, clear.
3. Return envelope - 1
Standard envelope with recipient address written and registered mail stamps attached.
4. Documents proving the relationship between the applicant and the supporter
Submit one of the following:
- (1) Family register (koseki tohon) - 1 copy
- (2) Certificate of acceptance of marriage registration - 1 copy
- (3) Marriage certificate (copy) - 1 copy
- (4) Birth certificate (copy) - 1 copy
- (5) Documents equivalent to (1)-(4) above - as appropriate
5. Copy of the supporter’s Residence Card or passport - 1 copy
6. Documents proving the supporter’s occupation and income
(1) If the supporter operates an income-generating business or engages in remunerated activities:
- Certificate of employment or copy of business permit, etc. - 1 copy
- Residence tax certificate (taxation or non-taxation) and tax payment certificate (showing total income and tax payment status for one year) - 1 copy each
(2) If the supporter engages in activities other than (1) above (e.g., student):
- Bank balance certificate in the supporter’s name, or scholarship payment certificate stating the amount and period of payment - as appropriate
Application for Change of Status of Residence
1. Application for Change of Status of Residence - 1 copy
2. Photograph - 1
4cm (H) x 3cm (W), taken within 6 months before application, front-facing, without hat, plain background, clear. Not required for those under 16 years old.
3. Passport and Residence Card
Present at the counter.
4. Documents proving the relationship between the applicant and the supporter
Submit one of the following:

3. Passport and Residence Card

Application for Acquisition of Status of Residence
This application is for acquiring Dependent visa status for a child born in Japan.

3. Documents proving birth, etc. - 1 copy
Submit the applicable document according to the following categories:
- (1) Person who has renounced Japanese nationality: Document proving nationality
- (2) Person who was born in Japan: Document proving birth (birth registration acceptance certificate, birth certificate, etc.)
- (3) Person other than (1) and (2) above who needs to acquire status of residence: Document proving the reason
4. Passport
Present at the counter.
