Designated Activities (Long-term Stay for Tourism/Recuperation) - Required Documents
The Designated Activities (Long-term Stay for Tourism/Recuperation) visa status is for foreign nationals with sufficient assets who wish to stay in Japan for an extended period for tourism, recuperation, or similar purposes. Both the principal and their spouse are eligible.

Important Notes Before Applying

- Applications with incomplete documents may result in significant delays in examination or denial of permission.
- All certificates issued in Japan must be submitted within 3 months of the date of issue.
- Documents written in foreign languages must be accompanied by a Japanese translation.
- This status of residence does not permit employment activities.
- The applicant must possess sufficient assets to cover living expenses during their stay in Japan, and proof thereof is required.
Application for Certificate of Eligibility (New)
1. Application for Certificate of Eligibility - 1 copy
2. Photograph - 1
4cm (H) x 3cm (W), taken within 6 months before the application, front-facing, without hat, plain background, clear image.
3. Return envelope - 1
Write the recipient’s address on a standard envelope and attach stamps for simplified registered mail.
4. Documents proving the applicant’s assets
Submit the following:
- Bank balance certificate (proving possession of assets such as deposits of 30 million yen or more)
- Other documents proving assets (real estate registration certificate, securities balance certificate, etc.)
5. Documents explaining the activities during the stay in Japan
Submit documents describing specific planned activities during the stay (tourism, recuperation, etc.).
6. Resume of the applicant
7. Documents regarding the residence in the home country
Submit documents proving the home country address (residence certificate, resident registration certificate, etc.).
8. Documents regarding arrangements in case of death during the stay in Japan
Submit a written pledge describing the procedures (repatriation of remains, funeral, etc.) in case of death in Japan.
9. Private medical insurance enrollment certificate
Submit documents proving enrollment in private medical insurance valid during the stay in Japan.
10. If accompanied by a spouse (applicable persons only)
- Documents proving marital relationship (marriage certificate, etc.)
- Copy of spouse’s passport
Application for Change of Status of Residence
1. Application for Change of Status of Residence - 1 copy
2. Photograph - 1
4cm (H) x 3cm (W), taken within 6 months before the application, front-facing, without hat, plain background, clear image. Not required for those under 16 years old.
3. Passport and Residence Card
Present at the counter.
4. Documents proving the applicant’s assets
Submit the following:

3. Passport and Residence Card
Present at the counter.
4. Documents proving the applicant’s assets
Submit the following:

- Other documents proving assets (real estate registration certificate, securities balance certificate, etc.)
5. Documents explaining the activities during the stay in Japan
Submit documents describing activities to date and planned future activities.
6. Private medical insurance enrollment certificate
Submit documents proving enrollment in private medical insurance valid during the stay in Japan.
7. Residence tax taxation (or non-taxation) certificate and tax payment certificate - 1 each
Must show total annual income and tax payment status. Can be obtained from the municipal government office.
